I don’t have any experience with minimalism, so I’m not sure what the actual purpose of it is. Everyone who likes this book is going to tell you that one of Carver’s strengths is his knack for understatement.

I wish someone could tell me. John Lennon read the book and said something about not even understanding what the guy was talking about. It was genuinely the only story that made me feel anything at all, hence why I latched on to it. In the story this is about as much space that Carver gives to the general background of the characters and setting. To read these stories might even be a little light on the heart of the human condition.

This is primarily, I am sure, because I have never really favored short stories, because I typically avoid vague endings. They are very short, but I’m sure I’ve seen adaptations of The Bath starting with a boy’s birthday cake and Tell the Women the grisly onethough I can’t track them down; perhaps it’s just Carver’s storytelling skill that makes me think that.
